Which formulas are supplied on the 313A Red Seal exam?

Find the official refrigeration formula list and practise choosing and using a formula instead of memorizing a page blindly.

Red Seal says its Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic trade page links the mathematical formulas supplied during the exam. That is a useful answer to a booked candidate's study question, checked 2026-10-05; it is not an announcement of a new exam policy. Open the list from the official trade page and use the current version for your preparation.

Where is the official formula list?

On the Red Seal trade page, follow Mathematical Formulas. Red Seal's formula resource says these formulas are provided during the examination. The trade page also separates the previous occupational standard for current exams from a newer standard whose exams are still under development. For study weights, use our current-standard explanation and the Ontario exam guide; do not silently use the newer task matrix.

Formula provision does not settle which calculator or stationery you may bring. Follow your own Skilled Trades Ontario confirmation and its current scheduling instructions for exam-day questions.

If formulas are supplied, what should you still practise?

Practise recognizing the quantity the question asks for, choosing the matching relationship, converting units, and checking whether the answer is physically plausible. Red Seal's preparation guide recommends understanding when a formula applies and what its result means. A supplied relationship cannot choose the right inputs for you.

For example, if a study problem asks for sensible heat transfer from airflow and temperature difference, label each value and its unit before using the relationship. Our 1.08 × CFM × ΔT walkthrough works through that case and explains the air-property assumption. If the problem instead asks for motor input power, volts times amps is not always watts.

How can you review formulas without wasting study time?

Make a short card for each formula you actually use: what it finds, required units, one worked example, and a common wrong choice. Check the official list again near your sitting rather than relying on a copied forum sheet. The study planner can place these cards alongside your weaker work areas. The free five-question sample is original, unofficial draft practice awaiting certified-mechanic review; its result is too small to predict your exam outcome.
