Crankcase heater or suction fix: when does liquid reach a compressor?

Distinguish off-cycle refrigerant migration from liquid floodback while the compressor runs, using the timing of the symptom.

A crankcase heater addresses refrigerant migration during an off cycle. It is not a universal fix for liquid returning through the suction line while the compressor runs. Timing is the first clue in this 313A troubleshooting exercise. Use equipment-specific instructions for real service decisions.

What happens while the compressor is off?

Copeland's application bulletin AE4-1495 R4 (August 2025) discusses off-cycle refrigerant migration to a compressor and says a crankcase heater can help minimize it in the application described. A colder crankcase can collect refrigerant; at restart, refrigerant in the oil can foam as pressure falls. In a paper diagnosis, a problem concentrated after a long shutoff points you toward off-cycle migration.

Our crankcase-heater glossary entry gives the term in one paragraph. Heater requirements, warm-up periods and alternatives vary by compressor and system; do not invent a universal setpoint or energizing time.

What if the liquid appears during operation?

Liquid returning through the suction path while a compressor runs is a different line of inquiry. Trace evaporator load, airflow, metering and superheat rather than treating a crankcase heater as the answer. Copeland's compressor application guidelines discuss off-cycle migration and inadequate suction superheat separately. That distinction is more useful than a single symptom label.

Low superheat alone does not establish the exact fault. Compare measurements with the specified operating conditions and equipment literature. The undercharge versus restriction exercise shows why one reading should not drive a diagnosis.

How would you reason through two study scenarios?

Scenario A: a compressor sits off through a cold night, then makes its worst noise immediately on start. Investigate off-cycle migration and the manufacturer's approved protection. Scenario B: symptoms arise after the system has been running, alongside poor evaporator conditions. Investigate running liquid return and the operating measurements. These are invented reasoning examples, not actual Red Seal questions or field diagnoses.

For electrical work, follow authorized isolation and verification procedures in CCOHS lockout guidance. The Ontario 313A exam page explains the current study outline, and the free sample is original, unofficial draft practice awaiting certified-mechanic review.
