Completing a 313A apprenticeship and passing the certifying exam are separate milestones. If you have just finished your program, a useful question is whether your provisional Certificate of Qualification is recorded while you prepare to write. This is a candidate question researched on 2026-09-28, not an announcement of a new rule. Check your own status with Skilled Trades Ontario (STO) before relying on it for work or booking.
What does the provisional certificate allow?
STO's provisional-certificate page, checked 2026-09-28, says it automatically issues a one-year Provisional Certificate of Qualification when an Ontario apprentice officially completes a program in a trade with a certifying exam. In a compulsory trade, the provisional certificate allows the holder to keep working while preparing for the exam. STO says its Public Register is updated to show the provisional certificate.
313A is a compulsory trade. STO's compulsory-trades guidance identifies a valid registered training agreement, provisional certificate or Certificate of Qualification as the usual ways to work in such a trade. A Certificate of Apprenticeship documents program completion; it is not the same credential as a Certificate of Qualification earned after the certifying exam. Check the actual status and dates in your STO account or register; this article cannot confirm anyone's legal authorization.
What should you check after your completion form is accepted?
STO says a completion package is mailed within 30 days of program completion, including the Certificate of Apprenticeship and provisional-certificate issuance notice. It also sends an Authorization to Test letter by email, or by mail if email is unavailable. Keep these as separate checks: has completion been officially recorded, does the provisional certificate appear in the Public Register, and have you received the testing authorization?
If your status or letter does not match what you expect, ask STO to review your record before booking or assuming you can keep working under a provisional certificate. Experienced workers approved through Trade Equivalency Assessment have a different entry path; do not assume this completed-apprentice provisional route applies to them.
Does the one-year term set your exam deadline?
The provisional credential's term and permission to sit the exam are different questions. STO says an expired provisional certificate does not remove eligibility to write the certifying exam. Its page also describes a possible six-month extension when circumstances beyond the candidate's control prevent scheduling or writing. It sets application timing and eligibility conditions; an extension is not automatic. Read STO's current instructions and ask STO about your own expiry date rather than treating this summary as an approval.
The same page says completed Ontario apprentices receive a waiver for their first written attempt, with conditions tied to completion date and trade. What can you study while the booking is being sorted out?
Use the official 313A exam information and check which Red Seal standard applies to current exams. On 2026-09-28, Red Seal still labels the previous occupational standard as the basis for current exams and says new-standard exams are in development. No Ontario changeover date follows from that statement. Build a short plan from the current outline and the topics your own practice exposes, using the study-plan guide.
